What the review revealed
July's research became more focused, but the portfolio's result was negative. My review described a pullback across related AI themes and found that different products often carried the same underlying exposure. A structured note's valuation change became a major driver of the month.
A cleaner diagnosis
I do not want to explain away losses by saying the research was right. Entry price, concentration, instrument choice and holding period are part of the decision too. The work ahead is to make those choices as explicit as the investment thesis.
Understanding a company and sizing a risk are different skills.
The reported result
The estimated Modified Dietz return was −1.08%, after adjusting for external cash flows. I am keeping the actual negative month in this journal. Hypothetical results that exclude a losing product are not a substitute for what happened.
